‘Beautiful mind’ of 13 local talents – Malaymail Paper
EACH artwork tells a story. With light or heavy strokes of a brush, an artist exposes himself, his thoughts and feelings, without ever saying a word. This is almost like — as they say in art circles — stripping yourself nude in public.
With that in mind, Core Design Gallery in Subang Jaya, Selangor is playing host to a new art exhibition themed Beautiful Mind from Feb 12 to 18.
The exhibition, curated by Core Design Gallery art director Scarlette Lee, will showcase 14 paintings and sculptures (including a wall installation) by 13 local artists who reveal their imagination and how they influence each other.
Two of the artworks are from Ali Nurazmal, and there’s one each by Abdul Hafidz Shabri, Arif Fauzan, Fadly Sabran, Faizal Suhif, Haafiz Shahimi, Husin Hourmain, Iskandar Murad, Jamil Zakaria, Meor Saifulah Lulaed, Mohd Akhmal Asyraf, Raja Lope Rasydidi and Syam Asmawi.
In this group exhibition, the artists are unconcerned with tradition and rules, and use different methods to convey what they feel and reflect on who they are as artists.
One of them, Raja Lope Rasydidi, 38, is a full-time artist, and self-avowed movie buff, from Perak. In his painting on display, he applied a surreal and comical style to convey a light and fun story to onlookers.
“I am the director of my painting and I want my audience to get high — in a good way — when they look at my painting… at least smirk or smile when they see my painting,” he said with much pride.
Another artist, Jamil Zakaria, 27, used wires to create a sculpture called Manis Berbisa, in the form of a toilet bowl which looks like a mouth!
“My sculpture has a double meaning, however you interpret it. Our mouth is like a toilet bowl, and sometimes when we speak, diarrhoea comes out,” he quipped in all seriousness.
• The Beautiful Mind exhibition will be officially launched on Feb 12 at 8pm, and will run until Feb 18. Core Design Gallery is at 87, Jalan SS 15/2A, Subang Jaya, Selangor.
