GREAT MALAYSIA CONTEMPORARY ART
A sampling of some of the excoting contemporary art practices will be on view at the Core Design Gallery booth. Called the Great Malaysia Contemporary Art (GMCA), the exhibition will feature several large-sized works measuring 3 metre to 4 metre in various styles on several issues. The artists featured are Anuar Rashid (Mih(raj): Home Sweet Home – North Star Constellation of Galaxies0, Tan Chin Kuan (Rainy Day), Eng Hwee Chu (Searching ; Facing The New Edge), Husin Hourmain ( Nota & Yasin Untukmu), Zulkifli Yusoff 9Pahang Warriors), Shooshie Sulaiman(Demokrasi & Propaganda), Ahmad Fuad Osman (Leap of Faith), Mohd Noor Mahmud (Alun I and Alun II), Hamir Soib ( The Auctionland) , Multhalib Musa, Haslin Ismail and Md Fadli Yusoff.
All come with great pedigree. The husband-and wife team of Chin Kuan and Hwee Chu have both been selected for the highly prestigious Asia-Pacific Triennial of art in BrisbanE aUSTRALIA, As had Zulkifli and Shooshie. Zulkifli, Shooshie, Chin Kuan and Haslin were also all Major Award Winners of the Young Contemporary Artists Awards, with Shooshie the only Malaysian to be offcially featured in the Dokumenta(2008) in Kassel, Germany. Zulkifli, known for his grang works drawing from Malay history and iconography, won the Grand Minister’s Prize at the 1989 Salon Malaysia besides the Major and Minor Awards in Sculpture. Chin Kuan is the only Malaysian artist featured in the Fukuoka Art Museum’s Asian Artist Today Programme in 1991.
Fuad, Mohd Noor and Hamir all delve into current socio-political issues and are co-founders of the new-cult art collective, Matahati.
Anuar Rashid, at 55 the oldest of the crop, is known for his magical, mythical Inderaputera series underscored by the 1983 work, wind, water and fire. He won 2nd prize in the coveted 1979 Salon Malaysia. And his new work seems to extend the parable, with elements of the peacock and the winged horse (al-Buraq).
